Hook Tender Training and Assessment

The following training courses and assessment checklist have been developed specifically for Hook Tenders.

There are two options for training:

1. Free online training. Click on the link below to access the Learning Centre. If you don’t already have a username and password, click on the Create New Account button on the Learning Centre log in screen to self register.

Online Training

2. Choose to Download the Learning Resources below. By choosing this option, the training will not be tracked and a certificate will not be issued.


Other Training – Ensure every new worker has a basic understanding of forestry work and worksite safety with Basic Forest Worker Training or elevate knowledge with optional General Forestry Courses like Chainsaw Operation or Resource Road Training.

  • 1013 - Basic Rigging

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:

    - Advanced rigging practices for Grapple Yarder

  • 1015 - Plan for Block Yarding

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Planning the block
    - Hazards in the block
    - Environmental considerations
    - Worker safety when planning the block

  • 1016 - Plan and Manage Day-to-Day Activities

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Planning day to day activities in the block
    - Managing the day to day activities in the block

  • 1026 - Apply Hook Tender Skills

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - How to prepare for work
    - Communication
    - Safety responsibilities of a hook tender
    - Job responsibilities of a hook tender
    - Supervision, training, and leadership

  • 1027 - Describe Hazards and Vehicle Dynamics Related to Operating Light Trucks

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Hazards and distractions
    - Vehicle dynamics and design
    - Implications of vehicle weight

  • 1028 - Describe and Operate Chainsaw

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Chainsaw components and safety features
    - Chainsaw inspection and maintenance procedures
    - Safe handling and transport of the chainsaw
    - Basic chainsaw operation and ergonomics
    - Hazards related to chainsaw use
    - Basic bucking
    - Limbing and taping

  • 1032 - Apply Advanced Rigging Techniques

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Cutting wire rope
    - Knots
    - Splices
    - Size of lines
    - Techniques to file spikes
