The following training courses are the dedicated courses developed specifically for Grapple Yarder Operators.

1013 – Describe Rigging Components and Basic Rigging Practices

1014 – Describe and Apply Advanced Rigging Practices

1021 – Describe and Operate Grapple Yarder

1022 – Moving a Grapple Yarder

1027 – Describe Hazards and Vehicle Dynamics Related to Operating Light Trucks (Optional)

1028 – Describe and Operate Chainsaw (Optional)

Other Training – Ensure every new worker has a basic understanding of forestry work and worksite safety with Basic Forest Worker Training or elevate knowledge with optional General Forestry Courses like Chainsaw Operation or Resource Road Training.


There are two options for competency training:

1. Online training. This option is tracked and a certificate of completion is issued. To enrol in online training, submit a completed enrollment form.

2. Choose to Download the Learning Resources below. By choosing this option, the training will not be tracked and a certificate will not be issued.

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:

    - Use, storage, maintenance, and removal of rigging

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Line work
    - Guyline placement
    - Tail hold
    - Basic splicing
    - Deflection
    - Advanced rigging practices for Tower
    - Advanced rigging practices for Grapple Yarder

  • 1021 - Operating a Grapple Yarder

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Pre-work activities related to operating grapple yarders
    - The operation of a grapple yarder
    - Completing task post operations

  • 1022 - Moving a Grapple Yarder

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Route planning
    - Risk assessment
    - Taking grapple yarder on and off low bed
    - Communication in the workplace
    - Inspecting equipment

  • 1027 - Describe Hazards and Vehicle Dynamics Related to Operating Light Trucks

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Hazards and distractions
    - Vehicle dynamics and design
    - Implications of vehicle weight

  • 1028 - Describe and Operate Chainsaw

    This course will allow you to demonstrate knowledge of:
    - Chainsaw components and safety features
    - Chainsaw inspection and maintenance procedures
    - Safe handling and transport of the chainsaw
    - Basic chainsaw operation and ergonomics
    - Hazards related to chainsaw use
    - Basic bucking
    - Limbing and taping
