Driving too fast for bush road conditions ends with crash of a truck hauling tidy tanks

Details of Incident / Close Call: 

A crew member driving to work with 2 full tidy tanks on the back of his F-550 truck came around a corner, after which is a slight downhill grade followed by a 90 degree right-hand turn.

The driver could not slow down and went off the road at the corner. Weather conditions at the time of the incident were wet heavy snow and the temperature was hovering around the freezing mark (-2 / +2).

Learnings and Suggestions: 

 

Key Contributing Factors:

• This operator was driving too fast for road conditions. This does not necessarily mean drive the speed limit, but drive only as fast as weather and road conditions allow for safe travel

• The weight of the fully loaded fuel tanks contributed to the driver not being able to slow the vehicle in time to make the corner
