Worker suffers metal shard embedded in his face: Review PPE and expect the unexpected

Safety Alert Type:
Workers
Location:
V Road North (Northwest of Prince George)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2013-01-10
Company Name:
Stones Bay Holdings Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A mechanic’s helper was assisting in the installation of a pin. As the pin was being driven into place, a shard broke off, lodging itself into the left cheek of the mechanic’s helper.

The helper was unaware the shard was embedded his cheek. He thought it was only a cut, even though his cheek swelled immediately.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Eye protection does not protect against all flying debris to the face or to the rest of the body. To prevent this type of injury use a pin press where and whenever possible. As this is not always possible, use Personal Protective Equipment to reduce the risk of injury (ie - a face shield would have protected his entire face).
