Hazard Alert: Log truck’s air brakes freeze up

Safety Alert Type:
Log Hauling
Location:
Taylor Creek, Mable Lake Rd., (Lumby, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2012-11-23
Company Name:
Exeter Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A loaded log truck was proceeding downhill on a snowy road. Upon reaching the switchback, the driver discovered he had no truck brakes (although the trailer did have brakes). The loaded trailer then pushed the truck around 180 degrees, where it ended facing uphill. The log truck driver called on a grader operator to come turn him around.

After the air valve thawed out the truck’s brakes were functional once again. Methyl Hydrate had been added at the air compressor but when the temperature dropped, the moisture in the air system froze and the methyl hydrate couldn’t get past the air dryer and the air valve froze up.

There was no damage or injury.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Install a fitting in the air tank so methyl hydrate can be added to the air system. Or install a methyl hydrate dispenser.
