Log truck tips onto side as road edge blends into ditch

Safety Alert Type:
Log Hauling
Location:
3.5km on the Lamprey Forest Service Road (near Houston, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2012-12-03
Company Name:
Andy Meints Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A logging truck was travelling back to the mill loaded. As the driver approached a corner his visibility was limited because it was snowing. In addition, the road was over plowed, so the road’s edge and the ditch blended.

The truck caught the edge and tipped over onto the passenger side. A butt-n-top came and removed the logs from the trailer after which the truck drove back to town empty.

Fortunately, the driver was not injured in the tip-over. Damage done to the truck: Needs a new door, mirror and mirror brackets, and a new 5th wheel and pedestals.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Drive according to road conditions

• Watch for corners

• Make sure roads aren’t over-plowed
