Hazard Alert: Bridge decks freeze up quickly!

Location:
Highway 33, approximately 20 kilometres east of Kelowna, BC
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2012-10-24
Company Name:
Cabin Forestry Services
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A work crew was in a vehicle travelling along highway 33 east of Kelowna early in the morning. As they crossed the frozen bridge deck over Mission Creek, the driver lost control and the vehicle spun out across the oncoming lane before rolling over down an embankment and coming to rest there.

Luckily, no serious injuries were suffered by the two occupants of the vehicle.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• SLOW DOWN – Driving 10 km’s per hour slower will greatly reduce the likelihood of an accident and please ensure you drive to the conditions of the road e.g. snow and sub-zero temperatures merit slower speeds.

• COMMUNICATE – If you are uncomfortable with the speed or way in which a vehicle is being operated, alert the operator and/or your project manager.

• INSPECTIONS – Complete a walk-around check of your vehicle every morning to ensure it is safe to operate e.g. all trucks should have tires with a snow rating (look for the snowflake symbol on the tire).
