Safety Alert Type:
Workers
Location:
Rankin Lake (East of Winfield, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2012-09-04
Company Name:
Spectrum Forestry Consulting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A field technician experienced a grizzly bear encounter next to a swamp complex. Initially the grizzly ran away – then circled back and closed to within 30 metres and sat down.

After a brief stare down, the field tech retreated half a step - the grizzly then leaped to within 20 metres and again sat down.

The field tech reached for the bear spray as the grizzly began to charge. The worker turned and climbed over some windfall, during which his hardhat was knocked off by a tree branch.

After climbing up the hillside for 30-40 metres, the tech looked back to see what happened to the bear. It was not seen through the dense brush and he quickly returned to the pick-up located approximately 700 metres away.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Call out prior to working next to high potential wildlife habitat areas

• Drop items when retreating (it appears the grizzly stopped to smell the hardhat)

• Notify other workers to avoid the area, or be prepared & aware
