Location:
St. Cyr Creek Bridge, Highway 23 North (near Revelstoke)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2012-10-24
Company Name:
Downie Timber Ltd. (Woodlands Division)
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A crew was driving out to work for the day on a highway that appeared to be in normal, good condition.

The truck was travelling at highway speed downhill when it crossed the St. Cyr Bridge and started to do a four wheel slide. Luckily the bridge had a short span and the driver was able to gain control of the vehicle again.

At the time of the close call the truck had good winter tires on. Several logging truck drivers travelling on the road that day were also heard commenting on the slippery conditions on the bridge.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Slow down when approaching bridges and tight corners, be alert at the wheel for black ice and slippery conditions

• Communicate issues with other drivers over the radio

• Make sure your vehicles are equipped for winter driving conditions
