Close Call: Icy ground can bring you down

Safety Alert Type:
Northern Interior (near Prince George)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
Company Name:
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A truck driver stopped at a mandatory wrapper check station at the beginning of a section of road to check his wrappers. While walking around his trailer, he slipped on the ice and fell to the ground straining the muscles in his back. No treatment or visit to a doctor was required and he was able to continue working.

Canfor’s supervisor contacted the sanding contractor and requested more sand be applied to the station area.

Note: One should be very aware of concussion symptoms should they strike their head when falling. Symptoms can be quite serious despite being unnoticeable to the injured person or someone who isn’t qualified to make such an assessment. Injured person should always be transported by someone else and follow up with a doctor should they slip & fall and strike their head.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Only stop and exit truck in a safe location

• Consider the area for walking on before stopping there

• Ensure you always use 3-pt dismount when exiting truck

• Ensure proper footwear is worn

• Consider using cleats over boots when walking on frozen ground

• In some situations given certain weather & road conditions, the only safe speed for a given stretch of road may in fact be zero. This may be related not only to safe control of your own vehicle, but also the other drivers around you.

• In the event of such conditions, please pull over at the nearest safe location and wait for the road to be sanded, or the hazard to be otherwise reduced.
