Bear dens should be approached very carefully!

Safety Alert Type:
Planning and Engineering
Location:
near Port Alberni (central Vancouver Island)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-12-02
Company Name:
Nikmar Forest Services Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

During field engineering, a bear den was identified. While assessing the habitat potential of the den, a bear inside the den clawed the workers hand. The injury resulted in 9 stitches.

Assessing the quality of dens is a necessary part of forest engineering. The majority of low quality dens can be assessed without an internal examination. However, potential high quality dens have a small opening and require a visual inspection inside.

Learnings and Suggestions:

To avoid putting the workers hand or face inside the den opening, future den inspections will require the use of an extension mirror and a flashlight.
