2008-10-22 Build-up of combustable material results in machine fire

  • While operating a John Deere 903J buncher the operator noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. 

  • The operator then opened the engine compartment and saw flames.

  • Fire Suppression system went off. 

During the investigation of the incident it was learned that the fire was caused by an accumulation of combustible material in the engine compartment. The operators had been trying to get a pressure washer on site to clean the machine in the days just prior to the incident

Learnings and Suggestions: 
  • Pressure washer to be made easily available to equipment operators.
  • Incident to be reviewed at next series of safety meetings with a review of maintenance procedures.
