2009-04-03 Cyclist verbally assaults crew

Safety Alert Type:
Comox road, Comox, BC
Date of Incident / Close Call:
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A work truck was parked along side the road (off the road) when workers were doing archaeological monitoring. An irate cyclist verbally attacked the monitors, claiming that the placement of their truck “almost got him killed!” The cyclist smacked the truck and assaulted a crew member’s tool box. The truck was not on a trail or bike path and left clearance for bikers/pedestrians to pass. The cyclist was seemingly mentally unstable.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Always carry a reflective cone or triangle to better mark a truck which is parked along any roads or trails. This will alert the general public to roadside equipment that could be a hazard.

Also be aware that when working in worksites that are accessible to the general public that attention can be drawn to worksites and there is potential for conflict, therefore, plan work and vehicle locations accordingly.
