The British Columbia Forest Safety Council (the Council) was created in September 2004 as a not-for-profit society dedicated to promoting forest safety in the sector. It includes all of the major forestry organizations and is fully supported by WorkSafeBC and the government of British Columbia. (LINK to member organizations and associations).

The Council was founded in the fall of 2004 as a direct result of the work and recommendations of the Forest Safety Task Force. The Task Force created a comprehensive strategy to dramatically improve the safety record of the BC Forest Sector, with a primary recommendation being to establish a permanent safety infrastructure.

MISSION AND VISION

Mission Statement

Our mission is to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries in the forest sector of British Columbia.

We will accomplish this by:

  • Promoting Cultural Change to ensure that safety is treated as an over-riding priority and a shared responsibility;
  • Promoting a Safety Conscious Legal Regime in which the laws, regulations and compliance programs encourage and support safety;
  • Developing a Competent and Confident Workforce where workers are well trained and will refuse to work unsafely;
  • Encouraging Companies to have in place functioning safety programs and policies that meet and exceed all regulatory requirements.
Vision and Mandate
Enacting the recommendations of the Forest Safety Task Force is the Council’s chief responsibility. One of the Force’s recent accomplishments was the development of a Forest Safety Constitution, The Health and Safety Accord of the BC Forest Industry.

WORKPLAN AND BUDGET

The Work Plan outlines the various initiatives and projects the Council is pursuing. Always a draft, the work plan is constantly being adjusted and circulated and all comments are welcome.

The Board reviews the Work Plan and budget allocation three times a year and presents a progress report at the fall meeting, after which the plan is extended a year. This five-year draft plan is always in effect.
