Members of Joint OHS Committees could be involved in the auditing process in a number of ways:
- Co-chairs of management and worker representatives could be invited to pre-audit and post audit meetings. This could provide input into the auditing process. For example; raising specific concerns that the company would like the auditor to assist with. Committee members could also be involved in the planning and implementation of the recommendations from the audit.
- Safety committee member(s) could be invited to be the auditor guide (knowledgeable person) to assist the auditor by providing documentation for review, arranging for interviews, and guiding the auditor during site observation tour.
- The BASE audit protocol requires the interview of joint health & safety committee members (Question C3C – Interview committee members or other applicable persons to determine if Standards Procedure and Administrative Controls (SPAC’s) are being reviewed.) Members would also be interviewed with respects to the overall safety management system.
- There are 3 questions in Element E – Health and Safety Communication Systems, specifically focused on joint health and safety committees (E3A, E3B & E3C). These questions ask for documentation reviews such as; terms of reference, meeting minutes and communication of committee minutes, and interviews of members of committee to verify their involvement.
