Details of Incident / Close Call: 

A worker lit the camp incinerator to burn the day’s garbage. An aerosol can was mistakenly placed in with the household garbage and expelled out the opening of the front door of the incinerator, striking the worker.

The worker was not hurt but this event could have been much worse, in creating a serious injury.

Learnings and Suggestions: 

• All workers must wear eye and head protection when burning garbage.

• Always ensure the door is kept closed as soon as possible after lighting.

• Remind all crews aerosol containers can and will explode. These containers have stored energy and are under pressure.

• It is the responsibility of everyone to ensure these items stay out of incinerators.
