Heavy seedlings are a potential MSI injury risk

Location:
Province wide
Date of Incident / Close Call:

Company Name:

Details of Incident / Close Call:

When seedlings are excessively watered before being frozen and then boxed, an unnecessary hazard is created.

Boxes filled with wet seedlings often weigh over 40 pounds. These heavy boxes pose a risk of injury to everyone in the chain of people handling them, from nursery staff, truck drivers, planting foremen and most of all the planters who end up having to lug them up mountainsides.

Planters are paid by piece rate and are reluctant to carry fewer seedlings than are required to get them to the “back of their piece”.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Planting contractors, licensees and seedling growers should work together to ensure acceptable box weights are maintained.
