Safety Alert Type:
Worksites
Location:
Southern Vancouver Island
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2013-03-27
Company Name:
TimberWest
Details of Incident / Close Call:

It has been brought to the attention of TimberWest that recent winter storms may have created new hazards in many workplaces across South Island Operations. High winds combined with snow loading of trees have resulted in significant tree-top breakage and at times windthrow.

Affected areas may now have increased ground hazards as well as increased potential for overhead hazards that may or may not be easily seen by workers.

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Pre-planning: Review active and upcoming workplaces to identify areas that may have been affected

• Revisit areas where hazard assessments may have been done prior to winter and see if there have been any changes to conditions

• Worker Awareness: Ensure the message of potential hazards is communicated down to all workers who could possibly be affected

Note: All the above recommendations are required to satisfy WorkSafeBC Regulation 26.2 “Planning and Conducting a Forestry Operation”
