Icy road forces log truck and trailers into ditch

Safety Alert Type:
Resource Roads
Location:
Junction of Con Lake Road & Shale Road (near Houston, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2013-02-06
Company Name:
Andy Meints Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A logging truck was leaving the block loaded and came to a corner at a junction. The corner was extremely slippery and the truck couldn’t steer around it, even though the driver was only going about 10km/h at the time.

The driver put his lockers in, backed up a bit and then proceeded forward to try and make the turn again. He tried to bring his front end towards the right of the road so that his trailer/pup wouldn’t go into the ditch on the left side of the road at the corner.

As he tried to go forward the truck would not turn and started to go into the ditch. At this time the driver applied his brakes, his trailer slid to the left of the truck and the pup went into the ditch on the left side of the road.

The entire road was blocked so no other trucks could get by. The driver was fine and had no injuries.

There was no sand on the corner so it was extremely slippery!

Learnings and Suggestions:

• Make sure corners are sanded well (especially on icy days)

• Be alert to potentially hazardous road conditions
