Safety Alert Type:
Resource Roads
Location:
Summerland, BC
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2013-01-14
Company Name:
Gorman Bros. Lumber Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A forestry worker drove through an existing cutblock and then parked in the timber where he got out and worked for the day. Upon returning near the end of the day the road through the existing cutblock had drifted in considerably, resulting in him being stuck behind the snow drift.

After a number of attempts to drive through the snow drift the worker was ultimately forced to exit the pickup and shovel his way out.

Learnings and Suggestions:

  • Be aware of changing wind conditions during the day.
  • Prior to parking a vehicle for an extended period, observe potential areas where drifting could occur and create road blockages.  Assess the road for hazards while driving.
  • If a potential drifting hazard is present, park vehicle in a more appropriate place or do not proceed past the potential snow drift area.
  • Always carry a shovel in your vehicle during the winter.
