Details of Incident:

It is with great sadness that the BC Forest Safety Council notifies the forestry community of our eighth fatality in 2012. This is the fourth faller fatality of the year. If manual tree falling is part of your operations, take a moment to meet with your falling crew to discuss this recent fatality.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died while working on a logging site on Vancouver Island on Sept. 13, 2012.

The deceased is Toby Lee Childs, aged 38, from Sooke.

Mr. Childs was part of a logging crew working in a rugged area in the remote northwest corner of Vancouver Island, northwest of Port Alice. He was felling trees on a steep uphill slope when something went wrong. He was found by co-workers within a few minutes of the incident, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service and WorkSafeBC are continuing to investigate this death.

As more detail is made available, the Council will provide additional resources and information.
