Beetle kill Pine: Assess the risk at your work site

Safety Alert Type:
Worksites
Location:
Canfor Woodlands Operations (Northern Interior region)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-11-22
Company Name:
Canfor
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A buncher had broken down on the cut block and required mechanical attention. The foreman and operator were working on the machine under the hood when a dead pine tree blew down and crashed on the top of the machine.

No injuries occurred. However, the potential for serious consequences with this incident was very high.

Given the increasing levels of dead pine blowdown in some areas of BC, this hazard is becoming more prevalent.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Consider the following before servicing equipment within two tree lengths of standing timber:

  • Complete a danger tree assessment right away
  • If possible, move the machine to a safe location, either on its own or by using another machine
  • If necessary, have the trees safely removed by qualified workers
