Speeding log truck driver charged by police

Safety Alert Type:
Log Hauling
Location:
Gold River Highway (northern Vancouver Island)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-09-08
Company Name:
RW Log Transport (608315 B.C. Ltd.)
Details of Incident / Close Call:

The driver was 20 kilometres from Campbell River, on a 2-load haul. The driver claims the trailer went on the soft shoulder after a car crowded the yellow line. The trailer then started to fish-tail going into the curve and caused the truck and trailer to roll over off the highway. The driver suffered some bruising but no major injuries.

The weather was clear and the roads were dry and the driver claims his rig was travelling at approximately 65 – 70 km/hr. After review of the scene by a company supervisor and the police, it was determined that the driver was speeding and was charged accordingly.

This caused the truck to roll over. This stretch of highway is narrow and windy and the driver should have erred on the side of caution. The driver failed to obey posted road signs.

Learnings and Suggestions:

All drivers need to be aware of their surroundings, including weather and road conditions. Obey the posted speed limits, always drive with caution and take into consideration what the weather and roads are like each day.
