Close Call: Logging truck drops short log on passing pick-up

On the afternoon of July 5, 2011 a pick-up truck was travelling west on the Nazko Highway when a loaded logging truck approached from the other direction. As the two vehicles passed each other, a ten foot log with a broken end fell off the logging truck. It struck the pick-up, causing substantial damage. Luckily, the driver of the pick-up was not injured.

Learnings and Suggestions: 

 Loader Operators:

  • Ensure that loads are properly crowned
  • Ensure cradle logs are full length and not broken
  • Check to confirm the load is secure with no loose or broken pieces

Log Haulers:

  • Ensure loads are wrapped securely and checked or re-tightened at key locations before hauling on main roads
  • Check the load for loose pieces
