Close Call: Block the wheels before changing a flat tire!

As a crew was travelling home from the work site, a flat tire occured on their crewcab 4x4. The driver pulled over to the side of the road, the crew exited the vehicle and grabbed the wheel jack from behind the seat.

The wheel with the flat tire was jacked up and as the crew removed the tire, the truck rolled forward and fell off the jack. The truck dropped down, pinching the flat tire between the brake assembly and the road surface. The crew had not blocked the wheels prior to raising the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries or vehicle damage resulted.

As a result, Gemini Services Ltd. will include this training in their annual spring training campaign.

Learnings and Suggestions: 
  • Ensure employees understand and follow manufacturer procedures for changing a flat tire
  • Train workers in vehicle troubleshooting, as per manufacturer instructions and procedures
