Safety Alert Type:
Workers
Location:
Mather Creek (East Kootenays)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-05-27
Company Name:
Sebben Forestry
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A layout crew working in the field was charged by a black bear being chased by hunting dogs. Once the bear was very close to the crew (approximately 5-10 metres), it noticed them and changed direction. At the time of this situation the two workers had their bear spray out and held their ground. The crew was shaken up but no injuries occurred and they continued working.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Warn other personnel working in the area about bear hunters with dogs
  • Avoid areas where hunters will most likely be bear hunting in the Springtime with dogs
  • Review with layout crews the use of bear repellents and actions that should be taken if this happens again
  • Review with layout crews the safe work procedure on problem wildlife and have everyone's input on the revision of this SWP to include bears being chased by hunting dogs
