Close Call: Slash burn creates hidden danger on resource road

Location:
Hisnit (Near Tahsis, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-03-24
Company Name:
Nootka Reforestation Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Worker was backing up a pickup truck to turn around on a wide spot of the road. The rear wheels went over the edge of the road and the vehicle was unable to move forward without assistance. The slash piles in the area had been burned the previous year and some "under burning" of the cordwood road had occurred. This caused the road's edge to become softer than normal.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Extra caution must be taken when driving near burn piles. Check for soft spots on the road surface and especially near the edges.

Roads built on logs may burn under the surface and cause structural damage. This damage may not be visible without examining the edges of the road.
