Close Call/Serious Incident - Keep aware of other traffic on resource roads

Location:
6200 Road, from km 2.5 to km 4 (near Quesnel)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-02-16
Company Name:
David and Doerksen Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Worker was driving to town on 6200 Road when he suddenly met another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at 4.5 km's. The drivers could not hear each other calling kilometres on the radio but other witnesses did hear them calling.

Further investigation determined that radio communication was very poor between 2.5 and 4 km's and pullouts were minimal due to very high snowpack.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Drive according to road conditions
  • Do not rely on radio communications to avoid oncoming traffic
  • Always assume there is traffic coming in the opposite direction
  • Use extreme caution along narrow sections of roads
