Close Call/Serious Incident: Be Bear Aware in Grizzly Country

Safety Alert Type:
Workers
Location:
Liberty Creek (near Revelstoke, BC)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-04-22
Company Name:
Downie Timber Ltd. / Treadstone Forestry Consultants Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A two-person engineering crew was running road recce and doing GPS work to a creek crossing and working about a kilometre apart. While searching for an appropriate bridge crossing, fresh Grizzly bear tracks were found by one crew member.

The bear's tracks were soon noted to circle back and were following the recce line back towards the second crew member. The first crew member alerted his partner by radio and they both retreated to the nearest road and walked out together on the existing road and promptly vacated the area.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Chance encounters like this cannot be prevented. The best you can do is to be alert and prepared.

Ensure that crew members working apart have a good means of communication (well-charged radios) and are familiar with the area to know safe evacuation routes.

Communicate the incident with other field employees to let them know that bears are becoming active and that bear spray or bangers should be added to their personal protective equipment.
