Close Call/Serious Incident: Branch strikes Faller’s eye

Location:
Woods Lagoon, Seymour Inlet
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2011-03-01
Company Name:
North Coast Standing Stem Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A manual tree faller had started limbing and processing felled wood. He limbed two branches starting at the butt of the tree and while limbing the second branch amongst loose debris, his chain caught a curved branch which flew up and under his screen going into his eye.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Remind fallers that even with a screen in excellent condition (as with injured faller), eye injuries are possible.
  • Watch for loose branches or debris that can catch the chain and propel towards you.
  • Back off on throttle if loose material is noticed (chain catching), ensure face screen is in proper position for work being undertaken.
