Hazard Alert: Filer cuts back of hand on chain grinding wheel

Details of Incident / Close Call: 

Filer was showing head filer raker height on chainsaw chain. The chain was in the chainsaw sharpening jig (used to sharpen chains). At the time of the incident the grinding wheel was running and as he removed the raker measurement bar, his right hand third knuckle came in contact with the wheel.

The filer was wearing cut resistant gloves that saved him from receiving a more serious injury.

 

Learnings and Suggestions: 
  • Review / observe hand placement of people doing chainsaw sharpening with this type of equipment and ensure finger, hand and arm safety in doing the task.
  • Review chainsaw sharpening tool guarding – can we make it safer?
  • If you see a worker performing a task that, if disturbed may put them at risk – wait until it’s safe to talk to them
