Details of Incident / Close Call:

Three crew members were returning home after work in a 2011 Ford F-550. They were travelling south on Highway 97 when they met a white coloured log truck pulling an empty short log trailer. The northbound short log truck had something swinging from the trailer (possibly a cable or chain).

As the two vehicles pased on the Salmon Valley bridge, the swinging cable or chain took off the top portion of the drivers side mirror, smashed out the drivers side door glass and destroyed the work light on top of the cabinet. The occupants of the Ford truck were unable to identify the log truck and while they were not injured, the damage to the pickup was estimated at $1,200.

The log truck driver did not know that there was something unsecured on the trailer. Therefore, it is believed that he/she performed an inadequate inspection of the trailer prior to driving on the highway.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Log truck drivers should do a full walk-around visual inspection of their vehicle prior to any departure.
