2010-11-17 ATV Close Call while Skidding Trees

Location:
Southern Interior Region-Central Cariboo District-White Road
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2010-11-17
Company Name:
Jeratec Forestry Contracting
Details of Incident / Close Call:

ATV close call. Operator was skidding small trees with the ATV and logging arch attachment. While going uphill the trailer (logging arch) hit a stump and almost flipped over. The trailer ended up coming off the ball and started to roll backwards down the skid trail. It rolled backwards about 20ft before hitting a tree and coming to a rest.

Learnings and Suggestions:

1)  Make sure the ball size matches the trailer hitch. In this case the ball size was     1 7/8 inch and the trailer hitch was 2 inch.

2) Attach a safety chain in order to prevent the trailer from rolling away uncontrollably in the event that it does come off the ball.

3) Never work downhill from another worker or equipment.
