2010-01-19 Insufficient Wrappers

Safety Alert Type:
Log Hauling
Location:
Southern Interior Forest Region-Cascades District-Merritt
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2010-01-19
Company Name:
G.R.A.M. Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

A logging truck driver was observed coming off the highway in to the yard to unload with only a single wrapper securing each bundle of short logs.  The driver failed to use the required number of wrappers because he was trying to save time and thought that at that early hour no one would be out on the highway and it would not be an issue.  Although there was no damage or injury incurred due to this incident, the potential for disaster was very high.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Truck drivers need to be reminded that "saving time" is no excuse for short-cuttying on safety.  Other personnel on the landing also need to be alerted to the need to speak up when they see someone acting in an unsafe manner.
