2008-08-20 Strawline Wrapped Around Worker's Leg

Mica, Red Rock Road, Branch 3000
Date of Incident / Close Call:
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Worker was unhooking the strawline from the haulback at the backspar on an adverse skid in order to move the backspar out.  Both lines were in front of the worker.  He gave the grapple yarder operator the go ahead on the radio.  The strawline whipped out of the backspar roster head and wrapped around his left leg.

The worker called on the radio to stop and fortunately the operator stopped the line in time.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Workers must be well in the lear and out fo the bight when the go ahead signal is given
  • When winding in loose lines operators should start to prevent tangles or excessive whipping of lines.  Once lines are moving smoothly and untangled then speed can increase
