2009-10-13A Feller Buncher track link broke

Location:
Maka Creek, SW of Merritt
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2009-10-13
Company Name:
Sanders & Company Contracting Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Feller Buncher working on 30% slope, track link broke, so one track fell completely off the track frame. With no track on one side, the machine is riding on the idler, the rollers, and the sprocket, which will not hold the machine in place on a steep slope.

The machine free-wheeled down slope about 10m before operator could regain control.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Inspect undercarriage for wear regularly, and close inspection of track links is necessary when operating in rocky ground.

This unit was inspected less than 100 machine hours prior to this incident, by the manufacturers undercarriage inspector, who failed to notice any cracks. Close inspection after the incident indicated the track links had to be replaced immediately.
