2009-12-11 Uncut dead pine falls narrowly missing feller buncher operator standing outside machine

Location:
2.5 Km Cotton FSR (Block AB5030)
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2009-12-11
Company Name:
Mibar Logging
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Feller Buncher operator exited machine for a break. While standing on the tracks something made him look behind him. From the uncut standing timber a dead pine tree (approx 18 metres/30cm. Butt) fell towards machine. Quickly scrambling back into the cab, the operator was able to miss being struck.

The tree fell where the operator had been standing. This could of resulted in a serious injury or death.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • If possible park more than a tree length from any standing timber surrounding machine or operator.
  • If possible stand undercover of the machine to some degree. This may reduce risk of being struck while out of the machine.
  • Be extremely cautious in dark conditions.
