2009-12-16 Empty Pickup with a work crew did not clear for a loaded logging truck

Safety Alert Type:
Log Hauling
Location:
40 km Whiteman Road
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2009-12-16
Details of Incident / Close Call:

An empty pickup with a work crew did not clear for a loaded logging truck. The logging truck driver was calling kms on specified radio channel for Whiteman Road every 2 km because no other vehicle traffic had identified themselves on this road. Calling every 2 kms is permitted when there is no identified vehicle traffic on the road.

The empty pickup never called their location when proceeding onto Whiteman Road from the Mowing Machine Road. The pickup did not call any kms or identify themselves in any way.

There was vehicle damage to the pickup only but there were no injuries. It should also be noted that the individuals in the pickup use this road regularly and have a radio in their vehicle.

For the safety of everyone it is always important to be aware of all traffic on the road and make proper use of your radio.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Use logging radios
  • Drive with caution
  • Be aware of all traffic
