2009-08-25 Sparks from tracks start small fire

Details of Incident / Close Call: 

A buncher operator was harvesting on block when he noticed smoke behind the buncher. Upon further investigation, he found that there was a fire. He notified the other buncher operator as well as the logging superintendent who attended the fire with other employees to help fight the fire. The fire was approximately 20’x20’ and was quickly extinguished. There was no damage to the surrounding timber or the buncher.


Root Cause(s):
- Ground and weather conditions extremely dry.
- Rocks hidden under moss made contact with the track and ignited the fire.


Learnings and Suggestions: 


- When weather conditions are extremely dry, be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Ensure that there are adequate fire fighting tools readily available to you at all times.
- If at all possible, stay clear of rocks that may come into contact with your tracks and cause a spark.
