Safety Alert Type:
Workers
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2009-09-16
Company Name:
Stones Bay Holdings Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

On September 16, 2009 a feller buncher was falling trees in an area next to a right of way. A fellow employee parked his truck on the right of way (next to where a buncher was falling) and walked to his machine without the knowledge of the buncher operator.

Causes:
The deterioration of the pine trees the stands currently being logged are dry and brittle. Feller buncher operators have noticed on many occasions that as trees are cut, the tops break off and fall to the ground around them. Care should be taken to avoid parking or walking close to areas that are being felled. In addition, any time you are entering a logging area where equipment is working next to the road, the operator should be notified prior to your passing, so that he may stop and allow you the safe passage.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Remember your pre-harvest sign offs and know where equipment is working. Pay attention to signage and communicate to operators that are working close by when you must travel passed them.
