2009-05-01 Side guard of engine strikes worker

Individual was checking to see if alternator was charging on a Clark 667 skidder. Removed engine side guard and placed guard on the engine hood. Instructed operator to start machine to check for alternator charging. When engine was idling, the side guard vibrated off the hood,striking worker on arm and face resulting in a large bruise on arm and a minor cut on face. No serious injury- face was treated by cleaning cut and applying bandage. 

Learnings and Suggestions: 

Do not place side guard unsecured on hood where there is a chance of vibration causing guard to fall off and strike worker or become damaged.
