Details of Incident / Close Call:

During a manual brushing contract, a worker contracted a serious staff infection in his left arm. An investigation revealed that the worker had worn a glove found in the back of the pick up truck and likely contracted the infection from the glove, through an open sore on his hand.

The resulting infection could have caused this worker to loose his arm. Three days in the hospital and two weeks lost time were reported.

Learnings and Suggestions:

Treat all open wounds no matter how small with disinfectant and keep the area clean. Do not wear other people’s gloves. Regularly wash or replace work gloves in hot conditions.
