2009-01-08 Beware of Thin Ice

Safety Alert Type:
Other
Location:
BC Southern Interior
Date of Incident / Close Call:
2009-01-08
Company Name:
Tolko Industries Ltd.
Details of Incident / Close Call:

Two separate recent recreational incidents in the Southern Interior have resulted in one fatality and one serious near miss. The immediate cause of both situations is attributed to thin lake ice, which has been caused by a very deep snow layer that has insulated the ice, preventing thicker ice from building up. The resulting deceptively weak ice poses an extremely high hazard to anyone snowmobiling, walking or standing on the ice.

Learnings and Suggestions:

 - Avoid snowmobiling on any water body for the foreseeable future.

- If you must go on the ice, be sure to drill frequent test holes to assess ice thickness.
