Internal Auditor Training Course

What is the Internal Auditor course?

Training designed for forest sector companies participating in the SAFE Companies program. Successful completion of this course will qualify the participant to conduct the internal BASE audit for year two and three maintenance of SAFE certification. If you want to conduct the internal BASE audit for your company, this training course is mandatory. You will also learn skills related to developing and implementing an effective Safety Management System for companies with 20 or more employees.

What does the course cover?

  • Overview of SAFE Companies and the BASE Audit tool
  • Preparing for the Audit
    • Organize your audit activities
    • Manage the internal audit process
  • Conducting the Audit
    • Review audit documentation
    • Carry out worker interviews
    • Conduct worksite observations
  • Processing and Reporting Audit results

    • Presenting audit findings

What does course participation involve?

The program consists of a three-day training course which includes a final exam.

  • Classroom Session – Classroom sessions will include lectures, class discussions, cast studies, group exercises, and training in the audit tool and process over a period of 3 days .
  • Internal Audit – Following completion of the classroom portion of the course, students will be required to submit an internal audit for review and to meet the maintenance requirements for their company’s SAFE Companies certification.
  • Feedback – We expect the students to provide useful feedback to assist the Council in improving the course and program in the future.

How is the internal auditor selected?

Companies may propose candidates for internal auditor training. Internal Auditor applicants require a combination of forest sector experience, health and safety experience, and a willingness to develop and apply audit skills.

The candidate must either be an employee of the company or be declared as a dependent contractor of that company. Internal Auditors are not allowed to conduct maintenance audits for more than one employer. The Council also recommends that larger companies send a representative that may not have primary responsibility for the safety program at that company or division. There is value in having a different person conduct the internal audit than the person who created or manages the safety management system.
