Who are they?
Forest Safety Advocates are folks with many years experience in the forest sector in BC. They all have on-the-ground experience developing, implementing or managing health and safety programs for a variety of forest related entities. They are trained by the BC Forest Safety Council to review small and independent forest companies’ health and safety programs. They will also provide advice on how to achieve SAFE Company certification. The Council currently has six Safety Advocates who are available at no charge to the sector.
Our Safety Advocates adhere to a Code of Ethics
What do Advocates do?
The Safety Advocate will work with forest companies in the following areas:
- Assess current safety programs and practices, and provide advise for improvement;
- Assist companies with implementing the Council’s Safety Toolkit;
- Review your SEBASE Audit prior to submission and provide guidance and assistance where needed;
- Generally, assist in any way that will facilitate improved forest worker safety.
How much time can a Safety Advocate spend with my company?
- The amount of time that a Safety Advocate spends with any one company will usually be one day. Please discuss this with your Advocate. If needed, the Advocate will be available for a follow-up visit.
How do I access an Advocate?
In order to access the services of a Safety Advocate, your company needs to be registered in the SAFE Companies Program and a member of your staff has attended the SAFE Companies 2 day Small Employer OH&S Training Course. This is a requirement to ensure that the client company has begun the basic steps of building a health and safety program.
If you are interested in receiving the assistance of a Safety Advocate, please submit a completed application form.
Once I applied for a Safety Advocate, what happens next?
Safety Advocates applications will be processed on a first come first served basis.
Accepted applications will be forward to a Safety Advocate in your area and he/she will contact you to make arrangements for your session.
Please note we currently have a limited number of Safety Advocates and there is no guarantee of immediate service.
How much will it cost?
Forest Safety Advocates will be provided free of charge to registered SAFE Companies.
