A supervisor need not have the title “supervisor” to be considered one under workplace regulations. The Supervisor Training Program is for anyone who instructs, directs and controls workers in the performance of their duties.
This course is intended to help Supervisors to keep workers safe on the job through effective supervision.
Effective supervision is a key factor in preventing painful and costly work-related injuries and fatalities.
A supervisor’s responsibilities can sometimes seem overwhelming. Management may have outlined your responsibilities as a supervisor. Even if not specifically stated, these responsibilities must include supervisor responsibilities – as contained in the Workers Compensation Act.
Research has shown that many supervisors have not received adequate health and safety training and do not fully understand their responsibilities.
Providing adequate supervision is the single most important duty a supervisor has towards their workers. As a supervisor, you must meet the standard of due diligence by knowing and carrying out your responsibilities and by having the authority and ability to carry them out. These responsibilities include knowing and complying with workplace health and safety regulations, understanding the hazards of the jobs you are supervising, ensuring workers are made aware of all hazards in the area and making sure that only authorized, adequately trained workers do the work.
By protecting workers, we are also protecting their families, friends, fellow workers, management and the public from the far-reaching effects of serious injuries. We are also protecting our ability to continue doing business.
The BC Forest Safety Council will offer supervisor training in 2007. To register on the waiting list or to obtain further information, please call Gary Banys toll free 1-877-741-1060 or 250-724-2813. All registrants will be contacted once program dates & locations have been confirmed.
