New Faller Training Program

The New Faller Training Program was created to ensure new fallers entering the workforce are properly trained and prepared to work in a safe, productive manner by maintaining the BC Faller Training Standard. The New Faller Training program includes 5 days of class work and 25 days of closely supervised field training followed by up to 180 days of falling activity under close supervision, before taking the faller certification exam.

WorkSafeBC (WSBC) requires all fallers in BC to be certified. New Fallers will be given the opportunity to apply for certification after they successfully complete the New Faller Training Program.

Why is this training necessary?

The IWA (now the USWA), independent fallers, forest companies, and the WCB (now WorkSafeBC) jointly determined one of the primary causes of falling injuries and fatalities to be lack of a standardized comprehensive training program for fallers. They recommended that fallers be trained and certified.  The BC Faller Training Standard was developed to ensure that all fallers, regardless of where they work, receive the same high-quality training to meet the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 26.22.  The goal of the BC Faller Training Standard is to ensure that anyone working as a faller has the knowledge, skills, abilities, work practices, and attitude necessary to work safely and productively.

Who should take this training?

This training is for anyone without previous experience as a hand faller who wishes to begin a career as a professional faller in BC. Employment opportunities for hand fallers are anticipated to remain strong and New Faller Training Program graduates will be in demand. The workforce is aging and employers will need professionally trained and certified fallers to fill vacancies created by increased retirement rates in the industry.
