Individual Owner Operator (IOO) SAFEty Course

Who is it for?

The forestry worker who is an individual owner operator. If you would describe yourself as the following, you are an IOO:

  • I am a self employed, individual owner operator. My company has only 1 on-site forestry worker, and that is me. I may also have an administrative employee who does not work on a forestry worksite.
  • I do not have employees or sub-contractors. If I do, I understand that I will need to get SAFE certified following the SEBASE training & audit process.
  • Typical forest sector IOOs include hand fallers, log truck drivers, equipment operators and forest professionals.
  • I may or may not have WCB coverage (POP) or other personal insurance.

The IOO SAFEty course is designed to help individual owner operators develop a safety system that works for them and their needs. Using an industry-approved and Council-supplied SAFEty Log, these individuals have a process to organize and track all their safety activities whether they are working on their own or on the worksite of another prime contractor.

What does the course cover?

The IOO SAFEty course is designed to assist you in developing and maintaining an effective safety system that will ultimately help you work more safely, as well as get you on the road towards SAFE Companies certification. Topics discussed include:

  • Creating a Forest Safety Culture
  • Roles and Responsibilities of the IOO
  • The SAFEty Log as a self-audit
  • Key Elements of the SAFEty Log: Emergency Response Plan, Safe Work Procedures, basic safety record-keeping, safety meetings and communications, Corrective Action Log, and audit submission guidelines.

What’s the SAFEty Log and when do I get it?

All SAFE-registered Individual Owner Operators will receive a SAFEty log following registration. For companies who registered before March 1, 2008, their SAFEty Log will be sent by April. It is important that you bring your own copy of the SAFEty Log to the training course in order to do the course activities. If you have not received your SAFEty Log by the course date, additional working copies will be available during the session.

Do I have to take this training?

Please note that participation in the IOO SAFEty course is mandatory for all individual owner operators pursuing SAFE Companies certification.

How long is it?

The course is a part-day course that will usually run from 8 in the morning until noon. For those who would like additional “hands-on” help, there will be an optional free 2 hour afternoon coaching session with the instructor.

When and where are the courses?

The course will be available in many locations around the province throughout 2008. As sessions fill up, we will attempt to add new courses in your area. We urge you to apply for the course early, both to avoid disappointment at not getting into your preferred date and location, but also to help us schedule additional courses with as much notice as possible.
